On five occasions in history the Church has gone to the dogs, but on each occasion, it was the dogs who died.GK Chesterton
What were the five occasions?
Don't know offhand.I'd guess... Roman persecution (maybe counting more than one wave). Corruption in the church after it became the state religion as protested against by Antony of Egypt (and Pelagius, among others).Huge corruption in the church again, combined with the muslim threat in the late 1400s and early 1500s.Rise of secular humanism with the French Revolution et al. (though some might say that's still happening)Chesterton was probably writing too early for the downfall of communism, so won't count that one.
