There's a really striking story here. Basically, some Germans have decided to hire themselves out to anyone who wants people to protest.
My guess is that this used to happen quite a bit, but it seems a telling indication of modern society that we'll support whatever our sponsors ask us to support.

it reminds me of the old custom in many cultures (i can think of instances in ireland and russia off the top of my head, but I'm sure elsewhere too) of hiring mourners for funerals. maybe in its current expression it's new, but the fascinating idea of a rent-a-crowd/mob/mourning parade has been going for centuries.
